Grid Leads

Grid leads for the surface of the brain

Flexible electrode arrays that rest on the cortical surface to record neural activity and deliver stimulation, built on our AirRay thin-film technology.

What they are

Grid leads place many small contacts on a soft, conformable carrier that follows the surface of the cortex. Every contact can record and stimulate, which makes them a versatile interface for electrocorticography, cortical mapping, brain-computer interface research and long-term neuroscience studies. The array communicates directly with the nervous system, the starting point for any closed-loop application.

The design space

We design each grid around the target, not around a catalogue. Configurable parameters include the number and diameter of contacts, contact spacing and arrangement (regular grid, hexagonal or a custom layout), the overall size and shape of the array, cable routing and the connector. Layouts range from small research arrays to higher-density grids.

AirRay grids, in detail

Built with our AirRay technology from very soft silicone in a high-precision laser process, our grids reach contact sizes down to 0.04 mm, contact spacing down to 0.06 mm center to center, and thicknesses down to 0.08 mm. Flexibility and stiffness can be tuned through the number and type of polymer or metal layers, and the outline can be shaped for specific needs, for example slit contours.

Typical configurations range from hexagonal micro-grids with 8, 16 or 32 contacts at 0.3 mm contact diameter to a square 4 by 8 array of 32 contacts with the contact arrangement shifted by 45 degrees. These are starting points; the layout is designed around your target.

How we build them

Contacts are laser-structured Pt/Ir in medical-grade silicone, produced with our AirRay technology, the same process behind our own implants. Because we build the electrode end to end, from contact to connector, we control quality across the whole part and can move a proven research layout toward a clinical-grade device.

From standard to custom

Standard grid configurations for R&D are available through our Chamfr store. For a specific geometry, contact count or a path toward clinical use, we develop the lead with you in a project.
