Despite not yet broadly used in modern medicine, especially chronically implantable neural interfaces are at the threshold of becoming a widespread tool in applied and transitional research and for medical purposes, where they support the development of novel treatments for a multitude of neurological disorders. Technical advancements allow to build bi-directional neural interfaces that have (concurrent) sensing and stimulation capabilities enabling more sophisticated and adaptive therapeutical approaches via electrical brain stimulation. Advancements in this field and the introduction of such chronic implants into the daily clinic landscape require the testing and evaluation in preclinical studies. These are still mandatory to demonstrate basic requirements for medical use, especially for devices currently under development intended for human application: long-term performance and safety.
